Product Material and Uses
Normally production with gray iron HT200, HT250, ductile iron 65-45-12, 60-40-18, 80-55-06, 80-60-03, 100-70-03, etc.
The ductile iron casting products are widely used for Auto-cars, trains, trucks, vehicle components, mining machinery components, agricultural machinery parts, textile machinery parts, construction machinery parts, etc.
How Ductile Iron is Made?
Most of the magic in making ductile iron happens in the furnace with the molten iron. You start with the iron (of course) and then add more carbon than the iron would normally be able to absorb into the structure. Explaining the iron-carbon relationship in another way, it is like adding so much salt to your water that you reach a point no more salt will dissolve. By the way, this is what makes ductile iron different than steel. Steel only has as much carbon as the iron can absorb.
Silicon, Sulphur, manganese, and oxygen all do their part in the mix to help the carbon to form into spherical graphite structures as the iron cools. This, admittedly, is an oversimplification of the process (after all, we are not training you for a metallurgical degree, though if you want one, we like the Engineering Degrees found in Wisconsin, don’t mind our geographic bias).
Properties of Ductile Iron
To create different grades of ductile iron, one must control the matrix structure around the graphite during the casting process or through subsequent heat treatment. The minor compositional differences between the different grades of ductile iron exist in order to create the desired matrix (microstructures).
Ductile iron can be considered as steel with graphite spheroids dispersed throughout its matrix. The qualities of the metallic matrix in which the graphite spheroids are suspended have a significant effect on ductile iron’s properties, but the graphite spheroids themselves do not.
There are several matrices found within ductile iron, the most common being
Ferrite – a pure, ductile, flexible iron with little strength. This matrix has poor wear resistance, but high impact resistance and good machinability.
Pearlite – a mechanical mixture of ferrite and iron carbide (Fe3C). It is relatively hard, with moderate ductility. It has high strength, good wear resistance, moderate impact resistance, and good machinability.
Pearlite/Ferrite – a structure consisting of a mixture pearlite and ferrite, and the most common matrix for commercial grades of ductile iron.
ASTM A536 Standard for Ductile Iron Castings
ASTM A536 is the American standard specification for ductile iron castings, the main material grades including:
Grade 60-40-18
Grade 60-42-10
Grade 65-45-12
Grade 70-50-05
Grade 80-55-06
Grade 80-60-03
Grade 100-70-03
Grade 120-90-02
